01 // HELION DEFENSE COMPACT

Record type // Orientation Material

source // frontier operations

The line holds

Nobody asked Helion to settle the outer system.

It built habitats where governments would not. It maintained shipping lanes that public fleets could not reliably patrol. It sold the machines that kept breathable air moving, clean water flowing, reactors burning, and settlements alive. Eventually the distinction between employer, landlord, supplier, government, and military became difficult to discern.

The Defense Compact grew in that space.

Compact pilots escort freighters. They hunt raiders. They pull crippled ships out of bad orbits. They stand watch over obscure stations whose names will never appear in an Inner World briefing.

Critics call Helion an army owned by a corporation.

They are not entirely wrong.

But neither are the people who rely on Helion when their pressure hull is breached and nobody else is coming to save them.

THE FRONTIER DOES NOT NEED HEROES.

IT NEEDS SOMEONE TO ANSWER the call.

02 // UNPGT

Record type // public information circular

//ATTN: all human settlements

The distance between Earth and a human life does not diminish the inherent value of that life.

The UN Office of the Protector General maintains the authority, personnel, and materiel necessary to preserve security beyond Earth. Blue Helm patrols inspect civilian traffic, enforce exclusion zones, escort vulnerable shipping, suppress piracy, and intervene where local authorities are unable or unwilling to maintain order.

The Astral Relief Corps arrives after reactor failures, impacts, decompressions, famine, and war.

Colonial Compliance arrives in time to prevent many of these disasters.

Protectorate Marines arrive when no other force is enough.

The uniform is the same blue, their mandate is the same:

WHERE HUMANITY GOES, ORDER FOLLOWS.

There are settlements in the Outer System where that sentence is reassuring.

There are others where it is understood as a threat.

03 // Deep Wardens

Record type // Threat assessment

source // Joint xenointelligence working group

//SUBJ: They do not want your territory

Current evidence does not support the classification of the Deep Wardens as an expansionist state.

They have issued no communications recognizable as territorial claims.

They have made no attempt to occupy human population centers.

They have demonstrated little interest in industrial facilities, mineral deposits, trade corridors, or civilian infrastructure except when those assets intersect with locations (ley lines?) of apparent custodial significance.

This, however, should not be interpreted as restraint on their part.

Deep Warden forces have repeatedly accepted what would seem to be significant losses to recover artifacts (?), destroy our excavation sites, silence survey operations, and prevent human access to structures whose purpose remains unknown.

There is no clear indication that they may be fighting for territory.

They perhaps appear to be enforcing a boundary. (Truly, the ‘Warden’ epithet has proven thus far accurate.)

The difficulty is that humanity is not presently able to discern where those speculated boundaries (or ley lines) occur.

Or what may lie on the other side.

THEY ARE NOT COMING FOR OUR WORLDS.

04 // Halberd

Record type // Material Profile

source // Helion Defense Compact

Halberd // Class: Strike Fighter

There are faster fighters.

There are fighters whose maintenance and operation manuals assume the existence of a clean hanger, an intact supply chain, and technicians who have slept recently.

The Halberd, by contrast, was built for the frontier.

Its spaceframe tolerates hard deployment cycles, field repairs, mismatched replacement components, and the particular abuse inflicted by pilots who know that the nearest proper shipyard maybe several million kilometers away.

Commander Talia Marr’s ‘Kestrel Actual’ passed through three separate yards while remaining combat-operational through the opening months of the Jovian crisis.

05 // AEGIS

Record type // Vessel Recognition

source // UNPGT Blue Helm Command

Aegis // Class: Patrol Cutter

An Aegis rarely fires the first shot.

This has led inexperienced opponents to misunderstand its purpose.

The cutter’s proprietary command sensor array maintains the local tactical picture while its crew distributes targeting data, coordinates friendly maneuvering, manages damage-control support, and places the ship itself between hostile fire and the more vulnerable elements of the taskforce.

An Aegis is not designed to win a fight on its own.

It is designed to tilt the scales in favor of its allies.

Pilots operating under Aegis coordination report cleaner firing solutions, faster threat identification, and an irritating tendency for the commander to predict whatever mistake they are about to make.

Blue Helm doctrine describes this as ‘cooperative engagement management’.

Aegis crews and their commanders have adopted another term:

‘HAVING AN ADULT IN THE ROOM.’

06 // Type-43 Eagle Ray

Record type // Threat Recognition Bulletin

source // HDC Combat Intelligence

Type-43 // UN Reporting name: ‘Eagle Ray’

Human classification remains provisional.

The Type-43 possesses no recognizable pressure hull, reactor compartment, propulsion assembly, or conventional flight-control architecture. Its broad control vanes alter geometry under acceleration. Encountered examples have vented pale fluids and continued maneuvering after damage that would destroy comparable human craft.

Current consensus describes the Eagle Ray as a bioengineered demi-organic spacecraft.

Do not simplify to ‘ship.’

Do not simplify to ‘organism’

Neither category adequately describes or predicts its form and behavior.

Combat cognition transcript recovered from Kestrel flight telemetry:

PILOT // Tell me that’s a ship.

TCS // Negative.

PILOT // Is that supposed to be helpful?
TCS // Negative.

IT IS NOT A SHIP.
THIS DISTINCTION WILL NOT HELP YOU.

07 // Type-26 Barracuda

Record type // Xenobiological threat profile

source // restricted

Type-26 // UN reporting name: ‘Barracuda’

Among Deep Warden Craft, the Type-26 is easier to identify than most.

Unfortunately, this should not make anyone more comfortable with the prospect of facing one.

It is alive.

Not merely organic/demi-organic. Not merely grown. Not a biological hull carrying conventional machinery.

Alive.

Human terminology continues to distinguish ‘pilot’ from ‘craft’, though examination of recovered tissue has provided no compelling evidence that the Barracuda conforms to the same distinction.

It pursues.

It anticipates.

It alters its approach unpredictably in response to evasive maneuvers.

And when a target attempts to break contact and escape, its acceleration pattern changes in a manner analysts have repeatedly and reluctantly been forced to describe as excitement.

One Helion briefing recommends that pilots avoid assigning human motivations to the organism.

The next paragraph, however, advises them to never let a Barracuda see them flee.

YOU ARE NOT INTERCEPTING IT.
IT IS HUNTING YOU.

The Meridian Run

The freighter Meridian carried water recyclers, station machinery, food stores, and replacement parts to the pair of colony cylinders at Callisto L5 (60 degrees behind the moon Callisto in its orbit around Jupiter).

There was nothing aboard worth killing nor dying for.

Three mysterious contacts, later identified as consistent with Deep Warden combatants entered the convoy envelope without warning: two Barracuda-pattern pursuit organisms and an Eagle Ray. They did not attempt to board the freighter. They did not identify themselves. They did not demand its cargo. Their attack patterns repeatedly shifted toward whatever element of the Helion escort revealed itself as most vulnerable.

Commander Cassian Rook eventually understood what they were doing.

They were probing the convoy’s defenses. They were learning.

The Meridian lost cargo, maneuvering capability, and sections of its outer hull. Rook’s Bastion gunship was breached. Commander Marr’s Halberd critically damaged an Eagle Ray and drove against the attacking formation.

The Wardens eventually withdrew.

Rook refused pursuit.

The Meridian was able to limp back to Helion space.

That was the victory.

Months later, Helion recruitment posters would show fighters over Callisto and talk about holding the frontier.

Date // 22 April 2248

The Dead Relay

There had been encounters before, dating back at least to 2247.

The hospital ship Caduceus had returned to Asterion relay yard mutilated, its survivors describing living things in the void.

Prometheus Station went dark.

Helion pilots fought unknown craft near Callisto L5 and then near Io.

Intelligence found explanations for all of it. Lies.

Radiation.

Pirates.

Trauma.

Equipment failure.

In April 2248, Talia Marr’s Kestrel squadron approached an eighteen-year-old communications relay drifting derelict between Callisto and Europa.

Deep Warden vessels were already there.

Lieutenant Owen Rhyse scored a kill against a Barracuda, the first confirmed kill against a Deep Warden, though his Halberd was destroyed less than a minute later, Lieutenant Rhyse died instantly. Ensign Hara Bell disappeared during an Eagle Ray attack. Marr continued the fight alone.

The Wardens were extricating something from within the relay.

Marr took the initiative and secured the objective artifact first.

She returned to Asterion relay carrying battle telemetry, news of two dead pilots, direct visual contact with multiple alien craft, and an artifact now known as the Black Lattice that human instruments could not consistently measure.

Her priority transmission contained the sentence that ended six months of plausible deniability:

DEEP WARDEN CONTACT CONFIRMED.

Ariadne’s Thread

Six months before the Jovian crisis had a name, the survey vessel Ariadne’s Thread disappeared near Europa.

Its final automatic status packet reported a survey-array malfunction and an unidentified return beyond the limit of its charted route.

The computer changed its classification of the return three times.

Debris.

Powered vessel.

Geological mass.

The measurements supporting each classification were internally valid.

They were also, however, mutually impossible.

A subsequent packet described the contact as several separate objects.

Then one.

A communications fault appeared shortly afterward.

The final broadcast was not automated.

The sensor operator typed it manually.

OBJECT ALTERING COURSE. NO DRIVE SIGNATURE.

No verified wreckage from the Ariadne’s Thread has been recovered.

The report was classified by Helion’s intelligence service.

Six months later, Helion Defense Compact pilots began seeing the same impossible geometry on their own displays.

The Wrong Question

“They kept asking me what they looked like.

That was always the first question.

Did they have wings? Did they have engines? Could I see a cockpit? Were they machines or living organisms?

I understand why those are the questions that people ask.

They want you to describe something that fits into a category they can recognize.

The first time I got a clean firing solution on an Eagle Ray, I remember feeling relieved. My rounds hit. Its shields failed. It bled out, that emissive white ichor, into the dark.

For a second, that made things simple.

Anything that bleeds can be killed.

Then it disappeared from every sensor the Halberd has, not even a drive signature, no debris, nothing to explain where it might have gone or how.

So stop asking me what they look like.

Start asking yourselves what they know about us.

Because if my encounters with them are anything to go by, they’ve got us figured out pretty good.

Beneath

Three independent instruments were used to estimate the depth of the cavity detected beneath the Europa site.

Radar returned 14.2 kilometers.

Neutrino tomography returned 611 kilometers.

Gravimetric reconstruction returned no lower boundary.

The survey team repositioned.

All instruments were recalibrated.

The test was repeated from a different orbital longitude.

Radar returned 14.2 kilometers.

Neutrino tomography returned 611 kilometers.

Gravimetric reconstruction returned no lower boundary.

The direction of the cavity had changed.

It remained directly beneath the survey platform.

A third test was conducted after the platform moved 2,400 kilometers along its orbit.

The cavity remained directly beneath the platform.

Dr. S. Ivers amended the report personally.

‘We have been asked to determine what lies beneath Europa’s surface. I recommend that we stop using the word “beneath”.

Automated translation renders the central term differently each time:

The complete passage has been tentatively reconstructed:

We inherited the keeping.

We did not forge the lock.

We do not remember the hand that closed it.

Linguistics personnel strongly caution that “door” may instead refer to eye, horizon, birth, or a boundary between states of being.

Before we were listening

During comparison of the Caduceus, Prometheus, and Hecate signal patterns, an automated search produced a partial match in a terrestrial radio-astronomy archive.

The recording predates permanent human habitation beyond Earth orbit.

The signal is weak.

It is buried beneath Jupiter’s natural radio emissions.

Its modulation sequence matches the later Jovian anomaly with a probability exceeding the laboratory’s false-positive threshold by eleven orders of magnitude.

The original observatory classified it as instrumental interference.

Nothing unusual appears in the surviving shift log.

One problem remained.

The archived receiver was not pointed at Jupiter.

A second problem was discovered three days later.

The recording contained two repetitions of the pattern.

The second repetition appears 0.84 seconds earlier in the raw data stream than the transmission event used to generate the comparison template.

The analysis team requested verification.

The request was denied.

The file had already been accessed.

According to the access log, it had been opened once before.

Forty-three years before the comparison search was run.

No user identity is attached to the earlier access.
