The Weird Moons

There are places in the Solar System where man was never intended to live.

That hasn’t stopped us from trying.

The outer Solar System is full of worlds that seem almost designed to be hostile to human life. Moons with oceans hidden beneath kilometers of ice. Moons that erupt into space. Moons that tumble chaotically through the darkness. Moons that are so dark that they barely reflect what little sunlight falls on them.

From Earth, they are hardly points of light.

Up close, they are something else entirely.

In the decades since humanity began pushing beyond the inner planets, we discovered that the outer Solar System is stranger than we ever could have imagined.

The outer system was never empty. Old charts make Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune look simple: A planet. A few moons. A ring system. Empty space.

The reality is considerably messier.

There are moons orbiting moons, captured objects moving in erratic paths, debris made from material that shouldn’t exist, oceans that never see the Sun, and celestial bodies whose surfaces have been repeatedly reshaped by forces operating deep below.

Some moons are worlds in their own right.

Others are little more than rubble held together by gravity.

Some may have environments capable of sustaining life.

Others are so hostile as to be intimidating.

//Callisto:

Callisto was supposed to be boring.

That was its reputation.

A heavily cratered moon, ancient and cold, orbiting far enough from Jupiter to avoid some of the worst radiation encountered in the Jovian system.

That was before Callisto became the gateway to the outer system.

Callisto became a waypoint. Then a depot. Then a settlement. Today, it stands as something much larger.

This history is full of gaps: Convoys that arrived late. Ships that never arrived at all. Telemetry that contradicts itself. Entire stretches of archived traffic that has been lost and fragmented over the long years.

The most famous example is the disappearance of Ariadne’s Thread, a freighter whose fate remains unresolved.

There are theories, and official explanations, and a considerable number of unofficial explanations. None of them explain the full picture.

And Callisto isn’t the only place where the records stop making sense.

// The Deep Moons:

Beyond the major settlements, humanity encountered environments that were wholly unable to accommodate us.

Ice moons became resource fields. Cryovolcanic bodies became industrial sites. Tidal forces were turned into a source of incredible power generation, and incredible hazard.

And beneath some of those frozen surfaces, instruments began detecting things that to this day have defied categorization.

The Deep Wardens are perhaps the most visible consequence.

To some observers, the Wardens are clearly sentient beings. To others, they represent an entire space-faring ecosystem.

To the people who have encountered them directly, those distinctions tend to seem academic.

Their forms would seem to be adapted to an environment almost completely unlike the one in which terrestrial vertebrates evolved. Their bodies are built for pressure, darkness, cold, and the peculiar physics of subsurface oceans.

They are monsters, encountered in places where Terran science previously ruled out the possibility of complex life.

// The Weirdness Is the Point:

The Solar System of Dead Orbit isn’t one where every moon has been conveniently terraformed.

It isn’t a Solar System where every strange object or artifact has been explained.

And it isn’t a Solar System where humanity was the first to arrive.

The farther humanity travels from Earth, the less useful its assumptions about the nature of the universe become.

The outer Solar System is full of environments that operate according to rules which humanity understands only imperfectly.

That uncertainty is part of the setting.

When Dead Orbit shows you an obscure moon, perhaps sitting several billion kilometers from the Sun, don’t assume it’s just background decoration.

Ask yourself what might be lurking beneath its surface.

Ask yourself who may have gone there, and who or what among them has made it back.

The Archive is still being expanded. Some records are incomplete. Some are contradictory. A few are deliberately so.

More fragments from the outer system are coming.
